The forklift-pedestrian problem

Warehousing & Distribution.
The clearest ROI case in the platform: struck-by prevention on cameras you already own.

Warehouses run on forklifts moving metres from pickers on foot, the #1 struck-by hazard. SecureSafety watches every aisle end and crossing and holds trucks to the site speed limit.

The sector

Why this sector is demanding.

Warehousing and distribution operations are built around the forklift — the most versatile materials-handling vehicle and, consistently, one of the most dangerous. The struck-by risk is structural: forklifts and order pickers share the same aisles, the same loading areas and the same dock approaches. At the end of every aisle is a potential collision, every time a truck exits at speed into a cross-aisle where a picker is walking.

Night shifts and peak-throughput periods amplify the risk. During high-volume operations, throughput pressure increases vehicle speeds and reduces driver attentiveness. During night shifts, the number of supervisors on the floor falls while the number of workers operating alone rises. These are the conditions in which most warehouse fatalities occur, and they are the conditions most resistant to manual safety management.

The camera infrastructure most warehouses already run — for security, stock loss prevention and management visibility — is the exact infrastructure needed for AI safety monitoring. Converting passive warehouse CCTV into real-time hazard detection requires no new cameras, no disruption to operations, and can be live in days from agreement.

Safety challenges

The problems AI solves here.

End-of-aisle conflicts and blind-spot management

The highest-risk point in any racking system is the aisle end, where a forklift exiting at speed and a picker turning the corner cannot see each other until they are already in conflict. SecureSafety monitors every aisle end simultaneously, alerting the moment a vehicle and pedestrian are on a convergence course, before contact.

Vehicle speed enforcement across the floor

Warehouse speed limits are routinely exceeded under throughput pressure, particularly on straight runs and in loading areas. The platform tracks vehicle speed in real time and alerts on every breach, while accumulating data that identifies the specific vehicles, drivers and routes where violations concentrate.

Loading dock safety and pedestrian exclusion

Loading docks are a distinct hazard environment: HGVs reversing, forklifts loading and unloading, and yard workers on foot in a confined area. SecureSafety monitors dock entry and activity, maintaining pedestrian exclusion zones during active vehicle movements and alerting when the boundary is crossed.

Proven in production
The forklift-pedestrian detection platform was proven in port operations and offshore environments — both more demanding than any warehouse — before entering the warehousing sector. The same accuracy standards that work on a busy quay transfer directly to a distribution centre with a fraction of the vehicle density.
Common questions

Questions from warehousing & distribution.

Does the platform work in a multi-level warehouse with mezzanine levels?

Yes. Each level is monitored by the cameras covering that area, with zone rules applied independently per floor. The control room view consolidates all levels. Fall detection at mezzanine edges is a standard zone configuration for elevated working areas.

Can the system distinguish between pedestrians and forklift drivers seated in their trucks?

Yes. The platform classifies pedestrians and vehicle operators separately. A forklift driver seated in a truck is not counted as a pedestrian hazard in the vehicle zone; a picker walking into the same zone is.

Does the platform integrate with our warehouse management system?

The platform integrates with WMS and EHS management systems via standard APIs. Integration scope, including alert routing and data export formats, is agreed during the Discovery phase.

How quickly can the system go live on our existing camera network?

For a standard warehouse camera network, go-live from network connection to operational alerting takes days rather than weeks. Zone configuration and testing adds additional time depending on site complexity. The Discovery phase produces a firm implementation schedule.

How quickly can the system be deployed in a distribution centre that needs to remain operational throughout?

The standard go-live timeline is 5–10 working days from Discovery sign-off. Installation is non-disruptive: the edge node connects to the existing CCTV network, no camera hardware is changed, and no operational areas need to be closed during installation. Configuration of zones and alert routing is completed during a commissioning period that can be conducted outside peak operational hours.

Can the system monitor electric forklift and AGV (automated guided vehicle) traffic as well as conventional forklifts?

Yes. The platform detects and tracks all vehicle classes including electric forklifts, reach trucks, order pickers and AGVs. For AGV environments where vehicle routes are programmed, the zone configuration can be set to monitor the pedestrian crossings of AGV lanes rather than the AGV routes themselves, focusing alert generation on the human element of the vehicle-pedestrian interaction.

How does the system handle the high-racking environment where cameras have limited sightlines at aisle level?

In high-racking environments, camera placement is typically at aisle end positions to cover the junction points where vehicle-pedestrian conflicts most commonly occur, rather than along the length of aisles. The Discovery phase camera survey identifies the optimal positions for each camera in the racking layout to maximise the coverage of conflict-generating locations.
